Lavender Fields in Blanco Texas

An overseas trip to France and a stroll through the Provence lavender fields may not be in the budget, but you can still see fields of purple in USA in Blanco, Texas.

As spring and the Texas bluebonnets bonnets fade, I was excited to see the wash of purple take over the hill country in the Central Texas lavender fields. You would never imagine that Lavender farming only began in 1999 in the Blanco region from the amount of lavender fields you will see.

Blanco Lavender Festival

Lavender season runs May to early July and his highlighted in Blanco by the Annual Lavenderfest on the 2nd weekend of June.

Blanco Lavender - Texas Hill Country

The center square grounds of the Historic Old Blanco County Courthouse become a Lavender Marketplace with a variety of vendors and artists from offering lavender-related products. Lavender products are also available on the Brieger Pottery store on the Blanco town square year round.

There are several local farms that are also open and an enjoyable afternoon with a picnic and the smell of lavender everywhere.

Admission is free during the festival and the farms offer activities and events related to lavender, such as classes in aromatherapy and demonstrations of  lavender oil distillation.  Some of the farms will even let you pick your own lavender from plants on the farm.

Two farms to try:

Other Attractions in Blanco Texas

Old Blanco County Courthouse

Make sure to take a look around the historic 1885 Old Blanco County Courthouse, nicknamed the “Grand Old Lady”.  These center squares with a central courthouse are indicative of these small Texas towns settled in the late 1800’s by European settlers.  The square has monthly market days with local vendors and craftsman.

Real Ale Brewing

Established in 1998, Blanco’s Real Ale Brewing has a tasting room for its locally brewed, hand crafted ales. Only available in Texas, Real Ale Brewing Company has been brewing ales in Blanco since 1998 and is ranked in the Top 50 National Brewing Companies for their quality ales.

Blanco State Park

Central Texas also has many local swimming holes to cool off in the local heat. You can take a cooling dip or a leisurely float from this park on the Blanco River. Check the State Website as many areas are closed due to the May 2015 floods and under reconstruction.

Twin Sisters Dance Hall

I am a huge fan of the Texas Dance Halls which celebrates good music and two steppin’. Twin Sisters Dance Hall has a public dance the first Saturday of every month.
