Book Review: Tools of Titans

by Tim Ferriss

Genre:

Non-fiction; Business

About the Book:

Through his success from the 4 hour work week, subsequent books and his podcast, Tim Ferris has met and interviewed many “greats” or titans as he calls them. Tim Ferris is a self-confessed experimenter and seeker of knowledge. He has also religiously taken notes. This book is collection of tactics, routines, and habits of billionaires, icons, and world-class performers from reviewing his interviews and interactions with over 200 people over the years.

Tools of Titans is split up into three sections – Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise. Then each chapter in the section highlights his discussions with a person categorized in that section. In fact, each person is all three – healthy, wealthy and wise in that each excel in their own fields.

Also a common theme in the book is that each one of these greats have recognized their weaknesses and maximized their strengths. They all have flaws, but focused on the strengths.

Favorite Quote:

“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society” – J. Krishamurti

Why I liked this book:

This book is a wealth of knowledge. It can be overwhelming and likely is not a single read type of book. I found myself flipping to some of my favorite authors immediately ie Malcolm Gladwell and Stephen J. Dubner to find additional nuggets and incites that Tim pulled out of them. But then, I settled in and started reading the book from the start, often finding that I would stop and do some additional research on the person at hand.

The book provides so many tactics and tools to try out in your everyday life. A common theme of all these greats though is discipline & focus in their daily routines and middle ground in their thought processes. Though these experts are the extreme winners in their fields, they all seemed to have mentality of slow & steady wins the race.

The book really had two qualities to it. First, it introduced me to some pretty amazing people that I have never heard of. I am pretty impressed at Tim’s curiosity to seek out and meet all these titans. Second, I appreciated the nuggets from each titan digested down to one chapter. In reality, each titan could and often does have at least one book if not multiple written about them. This format provides the highlights and just enough information to reveal their expertise. I marked many as “follow-ups”.

Tools of Titans is now a resource book to continually go over and extract wisdom and tools of the titans.
