The Location
Located in the heart of Georgian Dublin, The Davenport is the hotel for the cultural explorer combining heritage and history with modern upgrades.
The hotel is outside of Temple Bar so the area is a little quieter, but still walkable to attractions like Trinity College, Grafton Street and Merrion Square.
It is also right on the path of the Hop On / Hop Off bus for easy touring of Dublin’s sights.
The History
The Davenport dates back to to the early 17th century with a neo-classical columned facade.
It was formerly known as Merrion Hall and was a prayer hall accommodating up to 2,000 worshippers.
A fire destroyed the interior in the 1990’s except for the lobby and the the facade of the building.
The building re-opened as a four-star hotel by the O’Callaghan Group, a leading privately-owned hotel group in Ireland.
The Scene
The elegance of the Georgian facade continues with a modern sophistication inside.
This hotel has a plush lounge area complete with the obligatory bar in Ireland well stocked with all provisions and Irish favorites including Guinness… a must while in Ireland.
The Rooms
Modern rooms have been transformed for the modern guest with smart TVs with Chromecast and most importantly…. Dublin’s fastest hotel WiFi (1GB).
I also appreciated the multitude of ports for charging everywhere in the room including night stands and the desk.

The Dining
This was another quick one-night stop for me on a whirlwind trip around Ireland. I only tried their well-appointed breakfast buffet which was excellent.
The dining areas were new and shiny with excellent service.
In the Area
The Davenport provides easy access to museums, shopping and several cultural attractions. A quick walk will take you to Grafton Street for shopping, Trinity College for the Books of Kells and Long Room and Merrion Square for Georgian museums, door perusing and walks in the gardens,
It’s about a 15-20 min walk to Temple Bar or an easy Uber. I also utilized the Hop-On / Hop-Off to zip around Dublin which passes right by The Davenport Hotel.

Final Thoughts
The Davenport is a gorgeous hotel. Walking up to that Georgian facade is like stepping back in time, but the minute you walk through the door you have access to everything modern.
I only stayed one-night and would have love to enjoy more of the facilities including the 24-hour gym and dining.
It’s a great base for travelers to explore Dublin and have a quieter experience outside Temple Bar.
Thank you to Tourism Ireland & Steller for hosting me on this trip. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
